ICAS Prep: Locked-down browser

In our third post on ICAS 2025, we look at Janison Replay, the locked-down browser crucial for the Writing and Spelling Bee papers.

What is Janison Replay?

Janison Replay is a locked-down browser app which you can download for Windows, Mac and iOS devices. Janison Replay is designed so that students can sit their ICAS Assessment in a controlled environment, without access to other applications, virtual environments, spell checkers and other features. This preserves the academic integrity of the test.

All students must use Janison Replay when they sit the Writing and Spelling Bee papers.

If your child is sitting ICAS Writing or Spelling Bee at a BYOD testing centre, such as Focus Education, their device must already have the latest version of Janison Replay installed before the day of the test.

Checking your device is compatible

Before installing Janison Replay, check that your device will be compatible. The technical requirements for hardware and operating systems are here.

  • Note that Windows XP, Vista, and Android operating systems are not compatible with the locked-down browser.

Downloading and testing

We strongly suggest that you download and test the app at least a week before your child sits their assessment.

Step 1: Uninstall any previous versions from the device

Access the app settings on the device, find any installations of Janison Replay, and uninstall them.

Step 2: Download the latest version and follow the installation guide for your operating system.

The ICAS support page for Janison Replay is here. From this page, you can access the installation guide and download the latest version of Janison Replay for your operating system.

  • Check the hardware and software system requirements in the installation guide first.

After downloading and installing Janison Replay, launch the app and follow the instructions in the installation guide to enter the required URL.

  • MacOS users may need to grant accessibility to Janison Replay before it can be launched. If you receive this message after installation, use the administrator access to allow this.

Step 3: Testing

Finally, run the technical readiness tests including the locked-down browser technical readiness test to check that it is set up correctly. You can access the test here. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and follow the instructions.

Using Janison Replay

Your child needs to know how to access and use Janison Replay. We suggest putting a shortcut to the app on the desktop of your device or in a prominent location.

When your child accesses Janison Replay, they should see a screen like this:

Troubleshooting

Chromebooks

To install and manage Janison Replay on a managed Chromebook, you will need to have access to the Google account in the admin console. If you do not have this access, we suggest you use another device for the ICAS assessments.

iPad mini

The iPad mini is not recommended for Janison Replay due to the smaller screen resolution. The iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Pro are recommended alternatives.

Which browser to use?

We recommend using your normal browser app for ICAS Digital Technologies, English, Science, and Maths.

One response to “ICAS Prep: Locked-down browser”

  1. […] As with all the ICAS Assessments, Spelling Bee is a digital assessment. What’s more, students will need to use the locked-down browser and headphones for the test. See our post on the locked-down browser here. […]
